Does my dog need heartworm prevention when he’s inside all the time?
Since heartworms are caused by mosquitos and this is Florida where we have mosquitos year round it is a very serious concern. Your dog will spend approximately 24 hours a month outside taking walks, using the bathroom or taking a car ride. Since the risk is so huge we recommend that all dogs be on a monthly heartworm preventative.
How often should I bathe my dog?
In general, your dog should be bathed approximately every week or every few weeks. Never use a human product on your dog because they can upset the PH balance of your dog’s skin. We recommend using an oatmeal based dog shampoo.
My pet has bad breath – What should I do?
Usually bad breath in your pet is caused by dental disease which is one of the most common conditions in dogs and cats. If left untreated it can lead to much more serious problems including gum and mouth infections as well as diseases of the internal organs, including the heart. We recommend a complete dental checkup and a thorough dental cleaning.
Why does my pet need an annual exam?
We recommend that all pets have an annual physical exam. If they are older or have known health issues we would recommend twice a year. This enables us to understand their condition and health care needs. Because they age so much faster than humans, it’s important to be fully informed about their needs and condition.
How old can my puppy or kitten be safely neutered or spayed?
We recommend puppies and kittens be neutered or spayed early. Generally between 4 and 6 months is the best time because they have been able to develop and grow and have probably not yet shown any sexual tendencies. If these tendencies are developing, we recommend having the procedure done as soon as possible.
My pet is having surgery – Is anesthesia safe?
Anesthesia is safer than ever for your pet. Our team at Lake Wales Veterinary Hospital is committed to making sure that every one of our surgeries is done as safely as possible. Pre-anesthetic blood work is highly recommended to ensure that all of our patients are healthy enough for their surgery and have no health conditions that might be a concern. Pre-anesthetic blood work is a very important part of ensuring your pet’s safety!
